Developer Alliance Arts has officially cancelled its planned public Steam demo for the upcoming horror drinking game, Drunken Goddess Reflux. Originally scheduled for October 19, the studio shifted its strategy to host private, closed online play sessions for a limited number of participants instead.
The game features a unique "shot glass Russian roulette" mechanic where players compete against an anime demon girl. A notable gameplay element involves the rules becoming increasingly wild and strange as players consume more alcohol, with the ultimate goal of causing the character to regurgitate her soul.
Alliance Arts cited significant concerns that public access would allow AI tools to quickly replicate the game's presentation and mechanics, potentially leading to unauthorized clones appearing before the official launch. Additionally, the studio noted difficulties in managing restrictions on streaming and gameplay video uploads for a public demo.
This decision reflects growing industry anxiety regarding AI-assisted cloning, a phenomenon where indie projects are copied and released rapidly. While developers often rely on early community building to succeed, the risk of rapid imitation may lead more studios to restrict public access to their work until release.
