A resident of Puente Genil, Córdoba, has reported an attempted scam involving a call from a number starting with the 400 prefix. This incident occurred only four days after the prefix was introduced in Spain to combat spam, confirming earlier warnings from the UCO that the measure might be insufficient.

According to Cordópolis, the caller impersonated an Iberdrola employee to obtain the victim's banking information. Authorities emphasize that the 400 prefix, while reserved for commercial communications by the BOE of April, does not guarantee the legitimacy of a call. Criminals are reportedly exploiting this numbering to deceive recipients.

Police describe the incident as vishing, where scammers impersonate known companies to gain trust. Agents advise against sharing personal data, passwords, or card details during unexpected calls. They note that major companies generally do not request such sensitive information over the phone.

Authorities warn that scammers use caller ID to create a false sense of security, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals. If suspicious, the police recommend hanging up and contacting the company through official channels. Victims who have already provided banking details are urged to contact their bank immediately to block potential fraudulent transactions.
