Key information
On October 15, 2026, RocketWerkz, led by Dean Hall, and Ahwoo officially released the BRUTAL game development framework. This toolset is built upon C# and .NET, integrating low-level C++ libraries and Vulkan graphics capabilities.
Unlike comprehensive engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, BRUTAL functions as a modular foundation. It allows developers to combine specific libraries to build custom engines, offering greater control over technical architecture without being restricted by pre-existing engine designs.
The framework is currently utilized in the space simulation Kitten Space Agency. Additionally, Ludeon Studios transitioned its colony simulator RimWorld to the Waylith engine using BRUTAL. Ludeon reported that this migration resulted in a performance increase of 2 to 4 times compared to the previous Unity version.
BRUTAL is available for commercial use without royalties, though users must include credits and display a logo before gameplay. Because it lacks a complete suite of built-in tools, it requires significant programming expertise and maintenance, making it a specialized choice rather than a universal solution for all developers.
