Key information

A YouTube channel operated by a technician known as Zhang the Computer Repairman recently reported receiving seven Nvidia GPUs for repair within a two-day period. All units exhibited burnt interfaces between the 12+4-pin power cable and the graphics card itself.

The affected hardware includes various models, specifically RTX 5090 cards alongside Asus and MSI RTX 4090 units. The damage involves either a burned socket interface, which sometimes blackens the PCB, or a power connector that has melted directly into the socket, requiring users to cut the cable for removal.

Zhang performs repairs by replacing the interface and soldering on a new 12+4-pin socket. While testing these units with 3DMark benchmarks, he observed that some cards and PSU cables run warm, though he noted that users should be concerned if the connector is too hot to touch or if the 12+4-pin voltage drops to 11.3 V or 11.4 V.

The repair shop notes that these issues persist across different manufacturers and are not limited to weak power supplies or specific user setups. While the high volume of repairs may be influenced by the channel's popularity, the recurring nature of the melting connectors suggests a broader, ongoing concern for high-power GPU users.
