Activision is preparing to shift its development strategy for the Call of Duty franchise. According to Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl, the company intends to move away from established sub-series to focus on producing entirely new entries that do not belong to existing sub-franchises.

The decision follows feedback from the community, as Bahl acknowledged that players do not favor the consecutive release of games within the same sub-series. He noted that while different settings and features are implemented, fans are specifically looking for a shift in the overall tone of the franchise.

Bahl identified Modern Warfare 4 as the final installment of that popular sub-franchise, while referencing Black Ops 7 as part of the Black Ops series from 2025. These titles mark the conclusion of current sub-series cycles.

Future projects appear to support this direction, with reports suggesting the 2027 title will break from tradition. This upcoming game is expected to feature new characters and locations, set during the late 90s and early 2000s.
