A Reddit user reported receiving a counterfeit processor after purchasing an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 from Amazon. Despite arriving in a sealed retail box with matching heat spreader markings, the chip's underside revealed a design inconsistent with genuine AM5 hardware.

The fraudulent unit features a large empty central area populated by capacitors, differing significantly from the contact-pad-covered underside of authentic AMD chips. Commenters suggest a perpetrator likely delidded a legitimate processor, attached its heat spreader to an older Intel CPU, and returned the fake to Amazon for a refund.

Technical indicators of the fraud include smudged lettering on the heat spreader and a substrate layout characteristic of Intel desktop processors. The specific model of the underlying Intel chip remains unidentified, and Amazon has not yet provided an official statement regarding the incident.

This incident follows previous reports of similar scams involving fake Ryzen 7 9800X3D chips. Given the $899 launch price of the 9950X3D2, buyers are encouraged to film unboxing processes and thoroughly inspect both sides of high-end components upon arrival.
