The British trade body Ukie has introduced a new service designed to evaluate and certify the AI management practices of game development companies. Developed in collaboration with the law firm Sheridans, the AI Compliance and Accreditation Service aims to assist studios in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-related regulations.
The certification process involves four distinct steps tailored to each studio's specific needs. It begins with a private questionnaire regarding AI tool usage and licensing, followed by an initial risk assessment through interviews with Sheridans. The firm then creates or updates bespoke AI policies based on the studio's actual practices rather than using generic templates.
Upon completion of the review, studios receive the AI Certification Mark. This mark serves as external validation that the company has undergone a professional compliance audit. According to Ukie, this credential can be leveraged during critical business activities, such as project pitching, fundraising rounds, and due diligence processes.
This initiative addresses growing concerns regarding copyright and ownership rights associated with generative AI in game production. By providing a framework for external verification, Ukie seeks to help companies demonstrate the integrity of their development processes to stakeholders, offering a potential model for managing AI risks within the broader gaming industry.
