Paulo "Molleindustria" Pedercini, developer of the ecosocialist satire Future? No Thanks!, has disclosed his use of generative AI tools during the game's development. Despite labeling AI a "technofascist, anti-human and anti-art project," Pedercini admitted to using AI for minor debugging and text-to-speech voice acting.
Pedercini clarified that 99% of the game's code was written before AI tools were viable. He utilized ChatGPT and Claude as semantic search engines to fix specific bugs, such as broken shaders and loading glitches, noting that traditional search engines have become less effective for technical queries.
The game features approximately two minutes of AI-generated voice work for characters intended to spoof artificial intelligence. Pedercini explained that human actors were tested for these roles but failed to achieve the desired "uncanny" effect. He emphasized that no art or writing in the game is AI-generated.
Following the game's Steam release, a disclosure regarding generative AI was added to the store page. While Pedercini argued that individual actions cannot solve structural issues, his admission sparked debate among developers regarding ethical standards in independent game creation.
