The decomp.dev community, which facilitated information exchange regarding game decompilation and code organization, is shutting down. Founder @encounter announced the decision, citing an inability to prevent the misuse of open-source community efforts following rapid advancements in AI technology.

While the community originally focused on research and understanding game mechanics with respect for original works, recent AI models have significantly accelerated decompilation. However, @encounter noted that these tools are now frequently used for unauthorized ports and derivative projects that lack quality verification and fail to contribute back to the original research efforts.

The founder clarified that AI itself is not the problem, as it can be highly beneficial when used correctly. Nevertheless, managing the ethical use of these tools has become increasingly difficult. Consequently, the site has disabled new project additions and indexing, though it will maintain existing project tracking and historical data.

The platform remains under the control of @encounter, who has explicitly prohibited any replication of the site. This closure reflects broader industry concerns regarding the intersection of AI, unauthorized game porting, and the evolving ethical responsibilities of developers and users.
