Activision executives claim that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will stand alongside GTA 6 as the industry's primary titans. Marketing director Tyler Bahl asserts that the massive attention surrounding Rockstar's upcoming release will draw inactive players back to consoles, ultimately benefiting the multiplayer ecosystem of Call of Duty.
While Activision maintains a confident public stance, industry analysts note a more complex reality. Data from August indicates that 15% of players on PC and current consoles intend to purchase the new Call of Duty, compared to 10.4% for the upcoming Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.
However, these raw figures mask significant hardware disparities. The potential audience for Call of Duty spans nearly 50 million users on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, whereas the Switch 2 install base remains under 7 million. Proportionally, the adoption rate for the Zelda title is considered more intense given the limited hardware reach.
To combat declining engagement, with monthly active users dropping from 40 million to 25 million over two years, Activision has formed a strategic partnership with Nintendo. This collaboration includes co-marketing efforts to bring Modern Warfare 4 to the Switch 2, aiming to diversify Nintendo's user base while providing Activision with a new growth engine.
