Riot Games has announced the closure of LoL Classic, a mode that failed to maintain the sustained player engagement the company anticipated. Following its official release, the developer confirmed that the experience will conclude at the end of the 2026 season, rendering it unplayable starting in January 2027.
The developer intends for this departure to be temporary, with plans to potentially reintroduce the mode as a limited-time event featuring new adjustments. Before the final shutdown, Riot Games will implement specific play windows in regions suffering from long wait times due to low player counts and will introduce additional champions, including Irelia, Karma, Quinn, Aatrox, and Caitlyn.
Professional player Alex "Xpecial" Chu previously noted that the mode faced inherent challenges, as players held differing personal definitions of a "classic" experience. He argued that for many, the release was merely an old game rather than a nostalgic return, predicting that the initial excitement would inevitably fade.
Early development faced criticism regarding monetization and core gameplay mechanics. Riot Games eventually admitted the mode was a reimagining of the third season rather than a direct recreation of an old patch. Furthermore, players noted that the game's pacing felt significantly slower compared to the modern version of League of Legends.
