Persistent rumors suggest Sony may develop a portable PlayStation 6 alongside a traditional home console. This strategy aims to capture the lucrative mobile gaming segment and accelerate the company's transition toward a fully digital ecosystem, responding to the growing popularity of devices like the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and MSI Claw.
The potential move represents a direct challenge to Nintendo's dominance in the portable market. By re-entering this space, Sony would reignite a commercial rivalry reminiscent of the era between the PSP and PS Vita, requiring a robust strategy to avoid repeating past failures.
Shawn Layden, former president of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, warns that managing two distinct hardware architectures could strain company resources. Layden argues that such a split risks internal cannibalization, where one platform is neglected in favor of the other, as historically observed with previous dual-console generations.
While Sony explores this portable future, the company continues to navigate a shifting landscape where traditional home console sales are slowing. Success in the handheld market will require more than raw hardware power, demanding clear, long-term strategic support to compete effectively against established rivals.
