On October 22, Electronic Arts announced a shift in business strategy that includes the closure of the legendary RPG developer BioWare. As part of this restructuring, the company has officially cancelled the development of the upcoming Mass Effect title that was previously in the works.

BioWare, established in 1995 and acquired by EA in 2007, was responsible for iconic franchises like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. While the studio had recently released Dragon Age: The Veilguard in November 2024, the new Mass Effect project was being handled by a small team of veteran developers as it had not yet reached a stage requiring full studio resources.

The decision to shutter the studio and its Edmonton office has caused significant concern within the gaming community. Reports from Bloomberg suggest that this move is part of a broader layoff affecting approximately 400 employees across EA. This follows the company's recent acquisition by a consortium involving the Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, which left EA with substantial debt.

Despite the closure, EA intends to continue supporting other major projects. The company plans to invest heavily in Apex Legends, collaborate on future titles between DICE and Respawn Entertainment, and proceed with the development of Marvel's Iron Man and the next entry in the Star Wars Jedi series.
