Riot Games has implemented a new restriction on replay downloads in League of Legends as part of the patch 26.21 update released on October 21. While players were previously able to download an unlimited number of replays, the system now limits users to 10 downloads per hour. This change applies to both personal replays and those of other players.

The update follows significant community backlash regarding an earlier proposal to completely disable the ability to download other players' replays. Riot Games initially cited security vulnerabilities as the reason for that planned restriction. However, the community, including professional players and content creators who rely on studying high-level gameplay, strongly opposed the move.

In response to the criticism, the developer delayed the changes to patch 26.21 to ensure that coaches and content creators would not be negatively impacted. The new hourly cap is intended to prevent malicious actors from using automated applications to scrape thousands of replays, while still allowing legitimate users to study strategies and enjoy high-level matches.

Riot Games stated that it will continue to monitor download activity to balance security needs with player access. The company indicated that the specific download limits may be adjusted in the future based on these observations, ensuring that the community can continue to analyze gameplay and view professional matches without total access loss.
