Key information

On October 22, Electronic Arts announced the closure of its subsidiary studio, BioWare. Established in 1995 and acquired by EA in 2007, the Canadian developer was renowned for creating influential RPG titles such as the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. The closure also results in the cancellation of the upcoming Mass Effect project.

EA stated that the decision was not made lightly, acknowledging BioWare as a legendary studio that significantly contributed to the RPG genre. Despite this, the studio's operations are ceasing following the recent release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in November 2024.

Industry leaders expressed deep sorrow over the news. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski noted that BioWare was vital to his company's history, providing engine support and booth space during their early development years. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, a contemporary of the studio, remarked that it is difficult to imagine a future where no new RPGs are released under the BioWare name.

The announcement has prompted widespread reactions from various industry figures, including former directors Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah, as well as voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer. These individuals shared messages of gratitude and sadness, marking the end of a significant era for the gaming industry.
