Facepunch Studios is implementing significant changes to its game creation platform, s&box, following a launch in April that resulted in negative reviews and declining user numbers. Creator Garry Newman acknowledged that the platform's current state has failed to meet player expectations, prompting a strategic shift in development priorities.
Newman admitted that his previous vision of a "Netflix for games" model is not feasible for player discovery. Consequently, the platform is moving toward a curated "greenlight" system to address the influx of low-quality content. Facepunch has already removed numerous games and maps that failed to meet newly established quality standards.
Development focus is shifting from engine-centric features to enhancing the player experience within the sandbox mode. Planned improvements include adding more vehicles, NPCs, and customization options. Additionally, the platform's iconic "Terry" character model is being retired in favor of generic human characters, and necks are being added to character models following consistent user feedback.
The platform is scheduled to transition to a free-to-play model before the end of 2026. Users who previously purchased the game will receive exclusive Steam inventory items as compensation. These updates aim to address concerns that the platform lacked the spirit of the original Garry's Mod.
