The University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo inaugurated its Center for Entertainment Research and Education (CEREC) on September 29. The center, established in January 2026, aims to integrate the university's strengths in IT, AI, and VR with game-centric entertainment creation.
Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of PlayStation, participated in a panel discussion alongside university president Masakazu Muramatsu. Kutaragi noted that while the global game software market has reached 30 trillion yen, the fundamental production methods have not changed significantly since the original PlayStation project. He emphasized that the key to innovation is curiosity, warning students not to lose their drive by assuming they know the limits of what is possible.
Kutaragi cautioned against being subservient to AI, urging students to master it to achieve their own goals rather than merely using it to extract output. He argued that the future requires individuals who can evolve AI itself. President Muramatsu added that the center aims to foster an environment where students can collaborate across disciplines to create new technologies.
In a second panel, alumni from Sony Interactive Entertainment and Koei Tecmo Games discussed how their university studies in fields like haptics and VR prepared them for industry roles. They highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge and language skills in modern game development.
