TafayaGames showcased a playable demo of its debut 2D Metroidvania, Tsukiyo: Battle Doll, at the SAGA Barcelona Game Fest 2026. Developer Juan Carlos Suarez Camacho, based in the Canary Islands, leads the team behind this project, which marks their first event exhibition.
The game features a unique setting blending Japanese aesthetics reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras with steampunk elements. Players control Tsukiyo, an anti-heroine wielding a large sword who battles supernatural entities and armored mechanical foes. Suarez Camacho notes that his appreciation for samurai culture and anime like Samurai Champloo and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress influenced the game's dark tone.
A standout feature is the high-resolution pixel art, inspired by 1990s arcade fighting games and Prince of Persia. The protagonist alone utilizes over 2,000 frames across 117 animations. Suarez Camacho emphasizes the game's tactile combat, which includes intense hit-stop effects and fluid platforming mechanics like air dashes and wall jumps.
The expansive map includes varied environments, from forests to fortified castles, featuring verticality and gated progression. Players unlock new movement and combat abilities by defeating bosses or completing events. While this is the team's first commercial Steam release after roughly 1 year and 8 months of development, they aim to release a demo within six months while seeking a publisher.
