The new ROM hack Pokémon BugLime aims to revitalize the series' least popular category by focusing exclusively on bug-type creatures. Built upon the foundation of Pokémon FireRed, this project seeks to make insect-based monsters viable and engaging for players.
The game features 94 existing bug-types alongside various monsters reclassified as bugs. Creator spearmintz stated on a forum that the primary goal is to ensure these creatures are fun to use, rather than focusing on realistic adjustments. To achieve this, many monsters have received rebalanced stats, new movesets, and updated elemental combinations.
Gameplay mechanics have been modernized to include features from newer generations, such as shiny charms and quality-of-life updates like unlimited TMs and deletable HMs. The Experience Share item is now available midway through the journey, and players can select between Tarountula, Surskit, or Sizzlipede as their starter.
Gym leaders and NPCs exclusively utilize bug-type teams, though dual typing allows bosses to maintain their original elemental themes. While the project is currently available for players to download, the developer humorously notes that users can still rely on Repel if the insect-heavy experience becomes overwhelming.
