Microsoft and AMD have officially confirmed that the FSR 4.1 upscaling technology is arriving on Xbox Series X|S consoles. Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet announced the integration, though a specific release date remains unconfirmed beyond a general "soon" timeframe.
The FSR 4.1 system functions as a machine-learning-based temporal upscaler. This process renders games at lower resolutions before reconstructing them to appear at higher output resolutions. Beyond consoles, the technology is slated to support Radeon RX 6000-series graphics cards, Strix Halo and Gorgon Halo laptops, and handheld devices featuring Z2A or Z2 Extreme chips.
Implementation of this feature requires developers to manually patch their software, meaning existing titles will not receive automatic upgrades. Furthermore, because the current Series X|S hardware lacks dedicated machine-learning components, performance improvements may not reach the levels seen on the PS5 Pro, which utilizes proprietary PSSR and QSSR upscaling solutions.
The partnership between the two companies extends to the development of the next-generation console, Project Helix. While Microsoft CEO Asha Sharma emphasized that AI will be utilized strictly for engineering and performance optimization, reports suggest the upcoming hardware is targeting a 2028 holiday launch with a projected price range between $1,200 and $1,800.
