Key information

BioWare, the developer behind iconic titles such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, has officially announced its closure after more than 30 years in the industry. The studio shared the news via social media, expressing that the decision was difficult and emphasizing their current focus on supporting the staff members affected by this transition.

The studio's legacy includes a wide range of influential games, notably Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Anthem. These projects helped define the studio as a significant home for storytellers and developers over the course of three decades.

According to reports from Bloomberg, the closure is part of broader workforce reductions at EA, which is expected to cut approximately 400 jobs. This includes around 50 positions at BioWare. Internal communications from EA executives David Tinson and Cam Weber indicate that the company has been evaluating its business operations, resulting in the cancellation of early development on the next Mass Effect project.

This organizational shift follows the recent acquisition of EA by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, which was finalized on August 4. Additionally, Bloomberg notes that the underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in terms of sales expectations contributed to the decision to downsize the studio.
