Key information
Fortnite is once again accessible on iOS devices within Australia. This development follows a Federal Court of Australia ruling that determined Apple violated competition law by restricting alternative payment methods and third-party app stores.
Justice Jonathan Beach concluded that Apple maintained significant power within the markets for iOS app distribution and in-app payment solutions. Consequently, the court mandated that Apple must open its platform to third-party alternatives.
Starting in March 2027, Apple will be prohibited from mandating its own in-app purchase system or charging extra fees for transactions processed through third-party stores. Developers will also gain the ability to direct customers toward external purchasing options.
While Fortnite is currently available, the Epic Games Store is scheduled to launch later. Apple intends to appeal the decision, citing a desire to protect its intellectual property and maintain user security. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney characterized the court's decision as a major win for the industry.
