Nintendo has officially confirmed that its upcoming console, the Switch 2, will continue to support physical game releases. Bill van Zyll, the company's vice president and general manager for Latin America, stated in an interview with YouTuber Coelho no Japão that Nintendo has no current plans to abandon physical media.
The company intends to accommodate player preferences by offering both digital purchases and physical formats. These physical options may include traditional game cartridges or Game-Key Cards, which serve as access keys for digital content rather than containing the game data itself. Van Zyll acknowledged that Nintendo is aware of the strong interest fans have in physical media.
This commitment comes amidst broader industry discussions regarding game ownership and the shift toward digital-only platforms. While Sony has previously discussed moving away from disc drives by 2028, reports suggest the company may be reconsidering that strategy. Nintendo's current stance highlights a divergence in approach between the two manufacturers, though the company noted that its current position is not a permanent guarantee for the future.
