Electronic Arts has officially shuttered BioWare, the Canadian RPG developer established in 1995 and under EA ownership since 2007. This closure marks the end of the studio's operations as of October 21, 2026, following a broader corporate restructuring effort at Electronic Arts that also included a 3% reduction in its global workforce.

The shutdown directly impacts the studio's future project pipeline. Development on the upcoming Mass Effect title, which was in its early stages, has been terminated. Consequently, the company confirmed that the project, often referred to as Mass Effect 5, will not be released, effectively halting the series.

In a final statement posted to social media, the studio acknowledged its history of creating popular franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. The developer noted that its final release was 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The announcement emphasized that the team's current priority is supporting staff members through this transition.

BioWare expressed gratitude toward its player base for their engagement with its RPG titles over the decades. The studio thanked fans for their role in the company's history, describing them as the most meaningful part of its story.
