Amid industry concerns regarding the future of physical media, Nintendo has clarified its current stance. While Sony announced plans to cease production of physical game discs for new PlayStation titles starting January 2028, Nintendo has no current plans to abandon physical formats.
Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s Vice President and General Manager for Latin America, stated in an interview that the company understands the value players place on physical collections. He emphasized that Nintendo remains neutral, prioritizing consumer preferences while balancing both digital and physical offerings.
Van Zyll explained that pricing differences between digital and physical versions stem from distinct cost structures. Physical products involve expenses related to microchip components, packaging, and logistics. Despite these costs, he noted that physical copies retain collection value and facilitate sharing among friends.
However, this position is not a global policy guarantee. While current Nintendo hardware supports physical cartridges, the company has explored alternatives like "game key cards" that require digital downloads. Van Zyll’s comments reflect a regional perspective rather than a permanent, worldwide corporate commitment.
