Key information

Following the 1997 release of The Curse of Monkey Island, LucasArts attempted to adapt the beloved graphic adventure series into an animated feature film. Industrial Light & Magic was tasked with the project, which eventually attracted the interest of Steven Spielberg, a self-proclaimed fan of the franchise.

The initial script by David Carson, Patty Blau, Scott Leberecht, and Corey Rosen featured Guybrush Threepwood and the antagonist LeChuck. However, the production struggled with communication between the Hollywood team and LucasArts, leading to a script that drifted away from the source material's charm and humor.

Writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot were approached to refine the script but initially declined, claiming Hollywood had no interest in pirate films. Ironically, they later penned Pirates of the Caribbean, which premiered in 2003. Artist Anthony Stacchi noted striking character parallels between the two franchises, such as Guybrush and Will Turner.

The project ultimately collapsed after Spielberg suggested replacing the human protagonists with monkeys to differentiate the film. The team rejected this shift, and the department was dismantled in 2001. Any remaining hope for the film vanished with the 2003 formation of Lucasfilm Animation.
