Game Freak director and producer Shigeru Ohmori, known for his work on the Pokémon series including Scarlet and Violet, has announced a new title titled Ame nochi Hare-onna. The project was developed in parallel with the sandbox game Poko a Pokémon.
The game centers on a cycle of cleaning up trash in a city to prevent it from turning into monsters called Yamikumo. Inspired by the concept of tsukumogami, players act as a 'Hare-onna' to patrol and clean the streets. This process is structured as a magic card battle using weather symbols, where successful cleaning strengthens the characters.
Ohmori designed the game to integrate into daily life by utilizing weather data, which he identified as information people naturally check twice a day. The game features real-time weather data provided by Weathernews and includes over 3,000 sub-events developed in collaboration with JTB to simulate a travel experience.
Ohmori stated that the project aims to demonstrate that Game Freak is a company capable of creating diverse original titles beyond Pokémon. By using familiar concepts like cleaning and weather, he seeks to create accessible gameplay that avoids relying on niche fantasy tropes, reflecting the studio's DNA of turning everyday human experiences into games.
