Moon Studios is significantly transforming No Rest for the Wicked for its 1.0 release, abandoning the previous leveling structure for a new class system. Game Director Thomas Mahler explains this change addresses issues where character progression felt stagnant. The update, scheduled for March 2027, aims to roughly double the game's total content.

The new system ties classes directly to equipped weapons, such as the Dragoon for spears or the Harbinger for scythes. Players earn specific resources to unlock traits and active runes, which can be mixed across different classes. This design allows for over four trillion potential build combinations, encouraging players to experiment with diverse fighting styles.

Mahler acknowledges that the vast number of combinations makes perfect balance impossible, noting that some builds will inevitably be more powerful than others. He argues that rather than strictly enforcing balance, the studio will provide enough variety that the meta can naturally shift. He suggests that players finding powerful builds is acceptable, as the sheer volume of options remains engaging.

Beyond the class overhaul, the 1.0 update introduces smarter enemy AI, including stealth mechanics for the Assassin class. Additional content includes new zones, expanded town features for Sacrament, fresh enemy factions, and bosses. The developer also promises significant polish and optimization to accompany these major gameplay changes.
