Talaka is a 2D action-roguelike featuring a handpainted aesthetic and a setting inspired by Afro-Brazilian Candomblé mythology. Developed by Potato Kid, the game replaces traditional Greek pantheons with Orishas, forces of nature that act as upgrade-granting deities. The title is currently available as a demo during Steam Next Fest.
The gameplay structure mirrors titles like Hades, where players select weapons to clear rooms of mythological minions before receiving deity-bestowed upgrades. Combat is visually distinct, as melee swings and magic blasts leave thick, black brushstrokes, and defeated enemies leave behind colorful splotches on the environment rather than gore.
Reviewer assessments highlight the game's unique cultural grounding, noting that backdrops are based on real Brazilian regions and the soundtrack utilizes traditional Afro-Brazilian instruments. However, the reviewer noted that the movement and combat lack the immediate, free-flowing feel of similar titles, describing the platforming as floaty and the strikes as lacking tangible, weighty impact.
While the demo features some cosmetic issues like English script typos, these are expected to be addressed as the game currently lacks a formal release date. The developer provides incentives for aggressive play, such as bonus damage for chaining kills, though the reviewer found the difficulty challenging when facing bosses.
