Developer RGG Studio is set to release Stranger Than Heaven, an ambitious role-playing game that follows the life of Makoto Daito, a man of mixed American and Japanese heritage. The narrative spans several decades of Japanese history, tracking the protagonist's journey as he attempts to establish a home for himself amidst a rapidly evolving country.

The game introduces a distinct combat system that departs from the studio's previous titles. Players utilize controller triggers and bumpers for directional attacks, parries, and dodges. This mechanic is described as weighty and ferocious, though the reviewer notes it may prove divisive due to its steep learning curve and the necessity for precise, reactive timing.

Beyond its combat, the title features a brutal tone, incorporating visceral takedowns and violent finishers. The setting is highly detailed, showcasing the transformation of cities like Kokura, Kure, and Minami across different eras. Additionally, the game includes a management minigame centered on a musical revue, where players curate performances and adjust song arrangements.

Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release on 15th January for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. While the reviewer expressed enthusiasm for the game's soulful world-building and purposeful combat, they cautioned that the complex control scheme might alienate some players.
