AMD has officially announced that its AI-driven image upscaling technology, FSR 4.1, is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. This latest iteration aims to enhance visual quality and performance across the platform, following its previous implementation on Steam Deck and Steam Machine.
The technology functions by rendering games at lower resolutions before using machine learning algorithms to upscale the output. According to Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, this collaboration provides developers with a powerful tool to balance visual fidelity and frame rates, potentially extending the longevity of existing hardware.
While all Xbox models will benefit, the Series S and handheld devices like the ROG Ally and Ally X are expected to see the most significant improvements. This development follows Sony's recent introduction of QSSR for the PlayStation 5, a similar machine learning-based upscaling solution.
AMD has not provided a specific release date for the update. Looking forward, the company confirmed that future Project Helix hardware will utilize a successor technology called FSR Diamond. Meanwhile, reports suggest upcoming Project Helix consoles could reach price points as high as $1,800.
