Developer BioWare is officially shutting down after more than three decades of creating role-playing games. The studio confirmed that early development on the next Mass Effect project has also been cancelled.
The closure follows the acquisition of parent company EA by a group of investment firms for $55 billion. This group included Silver Lake, Affinity Partners, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
In a social media statement, the studio reflected on its history, citing titles such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Anthem. The team expressed that their current focus is on supporting staff during this transition.
While layoffs were anticipated following the summer acquisition, the complete closure of the studio remains unexpected. The situation is currently described as a developing story.
