Croteam and Devolver Digital have officially announced that Serious Sam: The Third Encounter is currently in the early stages of development. Despite the title, this project marks the seventh mainline entry in the long-running franchise.
The developers describe the upcoming title as a true continuation that picks up directly after the events of 2002's Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. The narrative focus remains on Sam battling the intergalactic menace known as Mental and his massive horde.
The gameplay experience aims to return to the series' roots, emphasizing the core loop of facing thousands of enemies with an arsenal of powerful weapons. This direction follows mixed critical reception for recent franchise entries, including the roguelite shooter Serious Sam: Shatterverse and Serious Sam 4.
Because the game is currently in early development, Croteam has cautioned that players should not expect a release in the immediate future.
