Tony de Waal, a former cinematic supervisor at BioWare, recently shared insights regarding a canceled Mass Effect project. De Waal, who returned to the studio in 2021, noted that approximately 50 staff members were developing the title before the studio's closure.

According to de Waal, the team aimed to deliver a unique experience characterized by a degree of player autonomy and choice unmatched by other games. The developers sought to elevate the franchise while maintaining fidelity to the original trilogy, drawing inspiration from recent titles by Larian and CD Projekt.

De Waal also highlighted the technical challenges involved in using the Frostbite engine for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. He described the process of managing a variable player character across over 3 hours of cinematics and complex end-game conditions as a significant effort.

The cancellation follows a broader restructuring at EA, which resulted in over 400 layoffs and the closure of the studio. De Waal expressed regret that the project will not be released, praising the talent of the team that remained with the company until its final days.
