The European rating organization PEGI has announced a policy shift regarding digital-only titles that contain paid random items, such as loot boxes. Starting in October 2026, games previously classified as PEGI 3, 7, or 12 will be re-evaluated and updated to a PEGI 16 rating if they incorporate these monetization mechanics.
This initiative stems from a new classification category introduced in June. PEGI intends to systematically re-assess existing titles to ensure that current standards regarding paid random items are accurately reflected across all digital storefronts that utilize the PEGI system.
Dirk Bosmans, a director at PEGI, stated that the updates aim to maintain consistency in age ratings over time. This approach specifically targets long-running online games that receive continuous updates, ensuring that their classifications remain aligned with contemporary criteria.
Because the re-rating process involves a vast library of existing products, PEGI noted that full implementation will take time. Developers and publishers are required to update their product listings and ensure that all future marketing materials reflect these revised age classifications.
