Key information
RGG Studios, the team behind Like a Dragon, has announced Stranger Than Heaven. The title follows the 50-year life journey of protagonist Makoto Daito, spanning various eras and locations including 1915 San Francisco and 1945 Osaka. Players navigate Daito’s personal struggles while engaging in visceral combat and managing a show business career.
The game features a unique combat system using dual limb controls, where shoulder buttons and triggers independently manage Daito’s left and right sides. Players must balance offensive strikes with defensive positioning. Combat options range from quick, one-handed weapons to heavy maces that offer devastating power at the cost of longer recovery times. Additionally, players can test their skills in the Arena, where optional constraints like “No weapons” provide extra bonuses.
Beyond fighting, Daito manages musical productions by collecting “Inspiration” from environmental sounds. Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto notes that players can compose tracks and organize live shows by selecting performers and stage effects. Success depends on strategic preparation rather than just rhythm-based reflexes, as players must balance operational costs with artistic choices to meet revenue goals.
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 on Friday, January 15, 2027.
