Key information
RGG Studio, the developer behind the Like a Dragon series, has announced its upcoming action title Stranger Than Heaven. The game follows the 50-year life story of protagonist Makoto Daito, beginning in 1915 San Francisco. Players will navigate various historical settings, including Kokura, Kure, and Osaka, as Daito searches for a place to belong.
The title features a unique combat system where players independently control the left and right sides of Daito’s body using shoulder buttons and triggers. Combat requires alternating attacks and blocking incoming strikes. Players can choose between unarmed fighting, fast one-handed weapons, or heavy tools like sledgehammers, each offering distinct tactical advantages and trade-offs in speed and impact.
Beyond combat, the game includes a deep showbusiness feature where players manage music composition and live stage productions. By collecting inspiration from the environment, players can compose songs and arrange them with different instruments. Success in managing shows depends on strategic planning, such as selecting performers and coordinating stage effects, rather than just reflex-based rhythm gameplay.
Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto notes that Daito’s core attributes, such as health and spirit, improve through daily activities like walking or reading. Additionally, weapon mastery levels increase attack power through use, while new moves are unlocked via side stories and minigames. Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, exclusively for the PS5 platform.
