Disney Lorcana is set to introduce a new mechanic called ink drops in its upcoming expansion, Hyperia City. These tokens function similarly to Magic: The Gathering’s Treasure tokens, allowing players to generate temporary ink for faster card deployment. The expansion launches at local game stores on Oct. 23, with prerelease events beginning Oct. 16.

Unlike generic resources, ink drops are integrated into the unique identities of the game's six ink types. According to the author’s hands-on experience, Emerald cards focus on superhero synergies, while Steel generates drops through combat and movement. Amethyst utilizes Shift cards and value engines to multiply these resources, creating a distinct mechanical vocabulary for each color.

The author notes that ink drops offer more than just acceleration. Players can accumulate or spend them to trigger specific card effects, such as boosting damage or drawing cards. For instance, the combination of Arthur and Merlin cards in Steel-Amethyst decks demonstrates how these drops can be used to build complex, engine-based strategies.

While the author suggests that the Merlin-Arthur combination is a clear demonstration of the mechanic's potential, they clarify that its competitive viability remains uncertain. Ultimately, ink drops provide a versatile tool that allows for both faster gameplay and strategic hoarding, distinguishing them from similar mechanics in other card games.
