Zach Cregger's recent Resident Evil film has officially secured the top spot as the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. Following a successful debut in China, the movie has accumulated over $320 million at the global box office.
This performance surpasses the previous record holder, 2016's The Final Chapter, which was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Anderson oversaw six films in the series that collectively earned more than $1 billion, though they generally received poor critical reception.
The new project also marks a career milestone for Cregger, outperforming his previous highest-grossing work, Weapons, which earned $270 million. Conversely, the 2021 release Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, remains the lowest-performing live-action film in the series.
Constantin Films, which has held the franchise rights since the '90s, previously considered pausing the series after the poor performance of Welcome to Raccoon City. While Cregger has expressed interest in future concepts, he is currently moving on to direct an original film titled The Flood.
