Scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is a new action-adventure title from RGG Studio. The game chronicles the 50-year life of protagonist Makoto Daito, exploring his search for belonging across five distinct Japanese cities and eras.
The combat system emphasizes physical realism, mapping left and right body movements to specific controller buttons. Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto explains that this design aims to synchronize player input with Daito’s growth, as he evolves from a vulnerable youth into a seasoned fighter. Players must manage stamina and weapon proficiency, utilizing various tools like clubs or blades to overcome increasingly difficult enemies.
Beyond combat, the game features a deep show business simulation. Players collect musical inspiration from the environment to compose and arrange performances. This system is integral to the narrative and serves as a primary method for earning money, requiring careful management of performers and production values to meet sales targets.
Sakamoto notes that while the game explores the origins of yakuza organizations like the Tojo Clan, it is a standalone experience. The title offers significant volume, originally conceived as a trilogy, now condensed into one dense narrative. It will be available in multiple editions, starting at 8,990 yen for the standard digital version.
