Takashi Mochibe, the developer of the simulation RPG Dragon's Chronicles~Reginleiv of the Twin Stars~, reported a significant increase in Steam wishlist registrations. Following a public disclosure on October 18 regarding an extortion attempt, the game saw a 38,400% surge in daily wishlist additions by October 20.
The developer was targeted by an individual threatening to release an AI-generated clone of his game unless he paid 200 dollars. Mochibe responded to the threat by challenging the perpetrator to create a superior game and warned other developers to remain vigilant against similar spam-like extortion tactics.
Mochibe noted that the incident ultimately served as promotion for his project. He jokingly requested that the extortionist send threats regularly and even added the individual to the game's credits as an honorary public relations officer. He expressed gratitude for the supportive messages received from the community.
This incident occurs amidst a broader trend of developers facing AI-related threats, including demands for Steam items to prevent the premature release of clones. Other creators, such as the team behind Project Solaris, have adjusted their development updates due to these concerns. Dragon's Chronicles is scheduled for a Windows release in the first quarter of 2027.
