The action game Oboro Muramasa, originally developed by Vanillaware and published by Marvelous for Wii and later PS Vita, is returning as Oboro Muramasa Kaikitan. This new title includes the Genroku Kaikitan DLC and features high-definition graphics. The game is scheduled for release on February 4, 2027.
Director Wataru Nakanishi and producer Makoto Shiota noted that the revival was driven by long-standing fan demand and internal desire at Marvelous and Vanillaware. Nakanishi, who worked on the original as a newcomer, emphasized that the team aimed to expand freedom in combat and exploration while preserving the core, exhilarating sword-fighting experience and the adventurous feel of traversing the world.
New mechanics include customizable special moves, weapon enhancement, and equipment effects, allowing for diverse playstyles. Quality-of-life improvements have also been added, such as event skipping, backlogs, shortcuts in boss areas, retry functions, and anywhere-saving. Additionally, the team implemented an automatic item sale system for when inventory is full.
A notable addition is the inclusion of various hot springs, featuring distinct backgrounds and effects, ranging from open-air baths with views of Mount Fuji to cave baths. Furthermore, food animations have been recreated from scratch by Shigatake to appear smoother and more appealing. Nakanishi and Shiota expressed hope that both returning fans and newcomers will enjoy the updated world and its refined aesthetic.
