The indie titles Valor Mortis and Tenebris Somnia have launched internationally on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, yet both remain unavailable in Japan as of October 19, 2026. While Xbox versions are currently sold domestically, the PlayStation and Switch versions face significant regulatory challenges regarding local age ratings.
The primary obstacle involves the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO). Although PlayStation and Nintendo Switch platforms utilize the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) system for some digital software, the Japanese storefronts do not permit releases under the IARC 18+ rating alone. Consequently, developers must obtain a CERO rating to release these titles on those specific platforms.
Developers for Valor Mortis confirmed on October 9 that the game is currently unavailable on PlayStation in Japan due to pending rating reviews. Meanwhile, Tenebris Somnia is slated for a domestic physical release, which necessitates CERO certification. Neither title has announced plans to modify game content to meet local standards.
Past instances highlight the difficulty of this process, as titles like Gears of War: Reloaded and Halloween: The Game saw their Japanese PlayStation 5 releases canceled after failing to secure CERO ratings. Developers often cite that modifying content to satisfy local審査 criteria would compromise the intended atmosphere or player experience, leaving the future of the current titles uncertain.
