Istanbul-based developer CoreCrew Games and publisher IndieI/O released the cooperative mining horror comedy game Coal Duty on Steam via early access on October 27. The title tasks up to five players with entering procedurally generated mines to fulfill national coal quotas while planning their escape.
Players must navigate mines divided into multiple biomes and three difficulty levels, encountering dozens of creatures that grow more dangerous at greater depths. A proximity voice chat feature adds tension, as nearby entities can overhear player communications, potentially alerting threats to the miners' plans.
Unlike the demo, which focused on surviving a single shift, the early access version centers on escaping. Miners can infiltrate restricted zones or trade with smugglers to devise various escape routes, each leading to different destinations. Failure to meet quotas may result in consequences for the workers.
CoreCrew Games expects the game to remain in early access for 12 to 18 months. Planned updates include new biomes, creatures, and escape paths. Players can influence development via Discord or Steam forums. The game currently supports 13 languages, and the price will not increase upon full release.
