STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl has received its 2.1 update, which builds upon the previous 2.0 patch by enhancing the A-Life system. This feature governs simulated NPC behavior, allowing characters to wander, fight for territory, and interact independently of the player. The update introduces settings to increase the distance at which these NPCs are visualized and their audio is audible.
The update also introduces a new mechanic allowing players to tag along with roaming stalkers. These NPCs can function as mobile fast travel stations, though they will only transport players to locations along their specific patrol routes.
While the game and developer blog warn that increasing the A-Life bubble beyond the default setting could cause lower framerates, quest instability, or crashes, testing on an RTX 4060 rig showed minimal impact. Performance dropped only from 93fps to 91fps when moving from the Recommended to the Maximum setting.
The reviewer noted that while the performance cost is negligible, the new settings introduce minor quirks. Specifically, the A-Life distance setting influences the range of faction markers on binoculars, and the Maximum setting appears to unintentionally increase binocular zoom magnification.
