DarkStone Digital, the studio behind The Mortuary Assistant, has released a free demo on Steam titled Playable Archive. This release follows the cancellation of a Paranormal Activity project that the developer previously worked on before Paramount declined to provide additional development time.
Studio owner Brian Clarke described the release as a form of personal healing. Although Clarke does not explicitly name the canceled project, he noted that it felt wrong to leave the work sitting on a shelf after investing significant effort into the title.
The demo offers 30 to 45 minutes of gameplay featuring a first-person camcorder perspective. Players take on the role of an investigator exploring a residence where a chaotic event occurred, utilizing tape playback and occult puzzle-solving to uncover the narrative.
While the full-scale game will not be completed, the demo serves to honor the work already constructed. Many components of the original vision were excluded from this version, which is now available for public access.
