Asus has announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a 20th-anniversary edition of its handheld gaming PC. Priced at $1,299.99, the device retains the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip as the original Ally X, offering identical performance. It is scheduled for release on October 15.

The X20 introduces several hardware refinements, including durable TMR joysticks and a 7.4-inch OLED touchscreen. The chassis features rubberized grips and a transparent, black-tinted design with gold accents. Additionally, the device includes a transforming D-pad that switches between 4-way and 8-way modes, though the reviewer found this mechanism awkward to operate.

Reviewers highlight the OLED panel as a significant improvement, noting it is brighter and more vivid than the original IPS display. However, the reviewer noted that the OLED screen may consume more power, resulting in shorter battery life during testing. The transparent casing was also criticized for allowing distracting light leakage from internal status indicators.

While the X20 offers a more premium build, the reviewer advises that current Ally X owners should not upgrade, as gaming performance remains unchanged. For new buyers, the $300 price premium over the standard model may be justified for those seeking the best available screen and build quality, though the original remains a more cost-effective option.
