Electronic Arts has reportedly shuttered BioWare and canceled the upcoming project titled Mass Effect Universe. Following these announcements, former staff members have cautioned fans against expecting the publisher to sell the franchise rights to another studio.
Romain Toutain, who served as technical director for the franchise since early 2022, stated during a Twitch livestream that EA typically avoids selling its intellectual properties. Instead, the publisher prefers to terminate projects while retaining ownership of the licenses.
Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah corroborated this perspective, noting that EA leadership avoids selling brands to prevent the risk of those properties becoming highly successful under the management of a competing company.
Despite these assessments, the community continues to advocate for the series. An online petition to save Mass Effect has surpassed 210,000 signatures, receiving public support from voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer.
