Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, has publicly condemned Valve's transparency requirements regarding generative artificial intelligence in video games. Sweeney described the mandate as "abhorrent," arguing that it forces developers to issue political statements that could be weaponized against them by hostile groups.

The policy in question, active on Steam since January 10, 2024, requires studios to disclose if and how they utilized generative AI during development. Sweeney has consistently opposed these labels, suggesting in 2025 that digital storefronts should remove them because AI will eventually become an integral part of nearly all production workflows.

Epic Games is actively integrating AI into its operations, aiming for a future policy of not writing code by hand. The company recently launched an Unreal Engine competition to showcase AI's value in game development, offering cash prizes and promotion. This initiative faced enough controversy that Epic had to clarify that participation was optional.

Despite Sweeney's vocal opposition, Steam continues to host an increasing number of titles that incorporate AI. While Valve maintains its transparency mandate, Sweeney insists that public disclosure requirements unfairly penalize studios that choose to adopt these emerging technologies.
