DarkStone Digital founder Brian Clarke has released a free prototype titled Playable Archive, a reworked version of his canceled Paranormal Activity: Threshold project. The game was originally slated for a late 2026 launch, but development halted in May after Paramount denied Clarke’s request for a short extension to February 2027.

The project involved players acting as a detective analyzing found footage. Clarke noted that development faced increased bureaucratic hurdles, which he compared to his past experiences at Disney and Mythic. He ultimately chose to cancel the title rather than rush a compromised product, fearing it would damage his reputation as an independent developer.

Playable Archive removes all official branding and serves as a 30-minute demonstration of the work completed before cancellation. Clarke, who previously developed The Mortuary Assistant, stated that releasing the prototype allows him to showcase his efforts over the past two years and gather player feedback for future projects.

The title is currently available for free on Steam. While the release does not provide direct financial gain, Clarke is already incorporating concepts from the canceled game into his next project, ensuring the work remains influential for his future development.
